MARLON FUENTES is an Ethnomusicologist, disc jockey, curator and tastemaker. Scouring the globe for funktastic music and sharing it with you is his favorite hustle and prime occupation. For nearly a decade, this vinyl junkie has been consistently serving turntable duty at the hottest corners of L.A. – hip Underground parties as well as hot spots like The House of Blues Hollywood, LAX, Zanzibar and Hyde Lounge are among the long list his past and present nightlife clients. World renowned Institutions such as the Getty Center and UCLA are among the venues that have summoned the quality of his performances for large scale events. He’s been featured on bills with artists like Erykah Badu, De La Soul, People Under the Stairs, Los Amigos Invisibles, The Game, Estelle and other major artists. In the world of Brazilian music and as a samba percussionist, he performed at concerts billed with timeless artists such as Djavan, Gilberto Gil and Caetano Veloso, and Azymuth. Coming up in a global city like Los Angeles, Fuentes has been blessed with audiences ranging from Music festival massives to the nouveau hipsters of downtown L.A. – to the most posh clubs in Hollywood. A recent highlight includes performing in front of 13,000 people at the 23rd annual UCLA Jazz and Reggae Festival, playing all Vinyl sets! You can also find his name in the credits of the , Brasilintime, a filme by Mochilla [Los Angeles]- in which he provided the spanish translation.
The balance between documentarist, artist, and administrator are crucial components of his multifaceted success in both musical and administrative sides of cultural work. At the same token, he has had the unique ability to satisfy multiple musical constituencies with his diverse background. His personal archive of feature stories, research material, as well as work with cultural institutions, include efforts aimed to preserve culture and market timeless collections of music and art to a global community. Other news worthy collaborations include design and music programming with Sergio Mielniczenko of the Brazilian Consulate, a seasonal position with the Los Angeles County Arts Commission, and the formation of his corporate idenity -Jakkmode Records LLC, with partner Alex Dyer.
